This Saturday is Purim. Back when I was in grad school, my mother came to visit for a weekend, and we passed by the Harbord Bakery. When she spotted the hamantaschen, she decided we simply must get some.
I didn’t really know much about Purim, but when I heard it was a celebration of the story of Esther, I was pretty excited about it. The book of Esther is an inspiring – kind of feminist story in the Bible – and it’s a pretty quick read.
This week I picked up some hamantaschen from the Harbord Bakery for the second time (after visiting Sam James for a coffee – a delicious day!)

Happy New Year! I wasn’t planning on having a New Year’s post per se, but since it found its way into the illustration what can I do, right? So here’s my first outfit illustration of the year. I was listening to the new Jay-Z and the illustration was definitely inspired. At first I was going to do something colorful and confetti-like, but like I said, I got inspired!
The full illustration can be seen here, and other close-ups here

I normally don’t take pictures at my parents’ home, but this time I wanted to document some of the home decor trends that have endured with them over the years. A bit unusual and eclectic I think, their style could never be described as conventional or minimalist! Looking through my pictures, I didn’t take as many as I would have liked – but I do have more on flickr. Hopefully from these close ups, you can still get an idea…
Lots of metallics and browns, some fun wallpaper, various accessories and artwork collected from abroad, and always lots of plants!

One of my What I Wore Today illustrations is featured in the current issue of UK quarterly magazine N.E.E.T. Check out page 12 for three illustrations by various artists from the Flickr group. Thanks Stephanie and Gemma!

On Friday I was tagged by Karyn to share some pictures of my desk. I love seeing photographs of artist studios and work spaces. But when it comes to my own space, documenting my desk is a little more complicated. You see, there are several desks, tables, and window ledges, all upon which I work on different tasks. Here I’ll share a few.
The first 2 photographs are of my computer desk. It’s pretty utilitarian. This is where I spend most of my time: creating art digitally, formatting files, and everything else computer. You’ll see a few coasters are scattered about in the second image above.
Next is a table upon which I also work. It holds many books, papers, and notes that I am currently referring to. Kneaded erasers always look so strange, but are good to have.

And last, this is where I draw and paint by hand, so I can get some natural light.
What space is complete without a little wind-up owl by nathan j?

Recently I learned about chocolate flakes that are served on toast for breakfast in Holland. I immediately realized that I needed to have them. And then I thought of the Dutch grocery in my old neighborhood. Sure enough, they stocked them.

One of my favorite things about it, aside from the obvious chocolate for breakfast part, is the shape of the little cut-out dispenser: slice of toast. Genius!

(CR)EDIT: To the people responsible for introducing me to this product in theory and in practice – thanks guys!

Hello.
